When Your Not Really Fine Funny

One of the oldest phrases in the history of modern communication is "I'm fine." It's the go-to answer whenever one person asks another person how he or she is doing. That casual response generally means just what it implies when exchanged between two acquaintances, who happen upon one another in passing. But, when it is asked by someone much closer during a difficult time, the meaning can run much deeper. So deep, in fact, that it usually means the person feels anything but fine. That's why "I'm fine" has become sort of a running joke, especially in romantic relationships. Nobody wants to hear his or her significant other mutter those two words, because it usually means two things: that person is not fine and the other person in the relationship is usually the reason why. In honor of all the reasons for someone to lie about feeling fine, here are 15 of the best "I'm Fine" meme and jokes.

15 The proof is in the pie

Call it sexist, but females catch the most flak for saying, "I'm fine" and not meaning it. Whether you agree with this assertion or not, it's still hard not to admit that there are some pretty funny jokes about girls saying, "I'm fine." That's because there really is just a slim chance everything is fine when a girl says so. But, don't just take our word for it. The proof is in this pie chart. Only on a rare occasion does "I'm fine" mean she's fine. It usually either means that she is going through so many internal struggles that she feels like she's dying inside or that she wants to kill someone. Most likely, the orange slice of the pie is reserved for friends and family, while the red slice is an answer given to her significant other.

14 The official scale

As if the pie chart were not enough proof to break down exactly what a girl means by saying that she is fine, Max from the show 2 Broke Girls breaks down the meaning of this phrase by comparing it to that of other responses. According to Max, fine doesn't mean fine at all. In fact, it is way worse than fine. That's actually the worst response a girl can give, falling in last place right after the dreaded "I hate you." If a girl really is feeling fine, then she would use the synonym "okay" instead of saying "fine." The word "fine" might as well be known as the four-letter "f" word that nobody wants to hear under any circumstance. Just when you thought it was something else, huh?

13 First of all...

Via: me.me

If a guy wants to hear something worse than "I'm fine" from his girl, all he has to do is ask her a follow-up question. This will inevitably open a can of worms and lead to more than he wanted to know. The worst question he can ask following the "I'm fine" answer is always "What's wrong?" This response goes ahead and lets her know that he knows something is wrong. She now has an open invitation to unload all of her problems on him, especially if he is at the root cause of some of them. Kim Kardashian is a perfect choice for this meme, since she is the queen of the Kardashians and the queen of drama at times, too. Her face says it all. She is about to let someone have a piece of her mind.

12 I just think it's funny that...

Via: me.me

If there is any response that possibly could be worse to the words "I'm fine" than asking a girl what is wrong, it's asking if she is mad. This not only gives the assumption that the guy thinks something is wrong, but also that it's something he did that has made her mad. Thus, the red slice on the pie chart that means "I'm going to kill you." That is not only an invitation for the girl to unload all of her problems, but also to unload all of the problems she has with the guy. She will likely preface this argument with the words, "I just think it's funny that," followed by whatever the guy did to make her say she felt fine. This stressful photo of President Obama on the phone is a perfect depiction of what the guy is experiencing on the other end of the line.

11 Better off without her

If "I'm fine" gets thrown around enough from either party in a relationship, it's probably best for the couple to call it quits. Nobody wants to dance around passive-aggressive responses forever. It's draining and just downright confusing (especially without having a pie chart for reference). In the long run, breaking up will be best for them both. That's exactly what makes this dog meme so relatable. Of course, it's funny because of the play on words and the fact that it's a dog. Still, anyone who has ever experienced a breakup can relate to this dog. It looks like people are wiping away his tears, while he is assuring them that he will be better off without the female dog. They seem a little concerned, though. That's probably because he said he was fine.

10 Feeling hangry

Via: me.me

The fakeness in "I'm fine" is usually linked to emotions. These emotions would include sadness, anger or hurt. All of these emotions can be represented at one time when a person is hangry (AKA hungry and angry about being hungry). It's hard to put on a good face and be in a good mood when your stomach is growling and you're starting to feel a little lightheaded from lack of nutrition. This woman is putting on a strong face, although we can all tell she isn't feeling fine. She even used the words "fine" and "okay," to prove that she is definitely not fine. How dare her friends not save her a piece of garlic bread? After all, she was working. It wasn't like she was late on purpose. Maybe they assumed she would be fine with it.

9 Drowning in sorrows

Relationships problems and not getting a piece of garlic bread are great reasons for not feeling fine. Another great reason for a person to not be feeling fine would be that every part of his or her life is in disarray. Imagine working all the time so that you have no time for anything, which means you have no social life, yet you still don't have any money. That would be enough to make anyone feel overwhelmed, or under the weather, or under the water...like this guy. He is essentially drowning in his own sorrows. That is, until someone asked how he is doing. Of course, he answers with "I'm fine." Well, he would if his head were above water. In the meantime, a simple thumbs-up will have to suffice.

8 Post-holidays blues

Via: me.me

There's the old saying about having a blue Christmas, then there's the possibility of having the after-Christmas blues. That's when the high of the holiday magic wears off and all that is left is that feeling of emptiness. By 'emptiness,' we mean feeling a little down because the excitement is over, not emptiness as in an empty stomach. In fact, your stomach is probably a little too full, as you're still stuffed from all the holiday goodies and now have to stuff yourself in your pants. One spot that might be a little empty, though, is your wallet. The gift of giving doesn't come cheap and all of those free family meals can't make up the cost lost on presents. You don't want anyone to know you're feeling a little depressed come January, so you make some resolutions and just say you're fine.

7 Fake it 'til you make it

This guy is looking on the bright side by making a joke of himself. He doesn't have his own ride, but he realizes the importance in perspective. His positive outlook on life is exactly what gave him the bright idea to crop this photo to make it appear as if he is riding high, in his own car. He also has a healthy sense of humor to show the full photo that reveals he is really riding the bus. He may not think that he is doing fine, but anyone who can joke about feeling fine and make a meme this funny sure seems to be doing better than the majority of people in the world. Maybe he should get a job as a bus driver and then he can have his own ride and own that bus.

6 I'm fine AKA sad

Via: popbuzz.co.uk

Yes, sad as it may sound, there are some people in the world named Sad. The person who drives this car might just be one of them, which would explain this vanity license plate. To most of the world, this message will be interpreted as the emotion, rather than the name, though. We have no way of knowing if the guy in the photo is Sad or sad or if the message means Sad or sad. Either way, this is one of those license plates that people like to take photos of and share on the internet. Of course, it didn't take long for it to become a meme. Part of that meme included the words "I'm fine," which shows that this phrase is just another way for someone to say, "I'm sad."

5 That time of the month

Via: onsizzle.com

It seems like we just can't get away from focusing on the fairer sex when it comes to the whole "I'm fine" debate. So, if we're going to talk about reasons and circumstances that would make women say "I'm fine" when they are clearly not feeling fine at all, that time of the month must not be overlooked. Hormones are running rapid in the female body, so to be fair, it's not entirely the woman's fault. Anyone who knows a woman well enough to know when she is on her period should know to tread lightly for a few days. Otherwise, "I'm fine" is about the best answer one can expect to get from someone who feels like she is being gutted from the inside out. Perhaps women are a lot tougher than some men think.

4 Get a grip

Via: onsizzle.com

Here we have another representation of someone who is dealing with un-fine feelings all around. Remember the guy who was literally drowning in his sorrows because he was overworked and underpaid and had no social life as a result? This may as well be the same person. As soon as this person tried to get a handle on life, it broke off. If that's not a metaphorical disaster, we don't know what is. Maybe the guy stuck on the bus should take a look at this meme. That way, he can see that owning a vehicle isn't all that it's cracked up to be. At least when riding the bus, there are no door handles and the door actually opens for you. Upon closer inspection, this car door looks to have "Kia" inscribed on it. That would explain a lot, since living life like a Kia means nothing is fine.

3 It's all in the outlook

Via: me.me

Just when you thought the guy on the bus had the most positive outlook on life, this little dog went and upped his game. This dog may have frolicked along to give us all a smile and a laugh, but it just so happened that he frolicked a little too far and got caught between a rock and a hard place—literally, as in a rock wall and a hard chain fence. He's still all smiles, though, just like anyone with a true positive outlook should be. By simply reading the captions, we can tell that this meme is meant to be sarcastic. But, regardless of how funny it is, maybe this little dog's troubles can help encourage somebody else who is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

2 Just ended it

Via: me.me

If women are the number one subject of running "I'm fine" jokes, then romantic relationships would have to be a close second. This meme focuses on one of those text conversations with a simple plot twist that will keep everyone laughing for some time to come. This guy is quick to admit that he just ended a five-year relationship, but he wasn't quite the innocent victim left in despair, as the person he was texting seemed to think. When asked if he was okay, he was quick to reply, "I'm fine." This is one instance though in which "I'm fine" actually means that the guy was feeling fine. It wasn't because he didn't care for leaving his significant other, like the dog earlier, but because he gained a significant other by ending another couple's relationship.

1 I'm fine, mom

Via: ufunk.net

"I'm fine" can be used as a cover-up for when life is going rough, when you're feeling bad or when you're feeling like picking a passive-aggressive fight with someone else. But, there's one more reason for muttering "I'm fine" that we need to explore. That is when a worried mother questions her son or daughter's state of being. "I'm fine" is the quickest way to let that mother know that you are indeed okay and that she can quit asking you anytime now.

Imagine this mother's worries when her son decided to travel the world. Just to reassure her that he was fine, Jonathan Kubben QuiƱonez made it a point to hold up a sign to show his mom that he was fine everywhere he went along the way. And since it would be hard to hold up a sign while skydiving, he improvised by writing it on his hands. That has to be the finest "I'm fine" to date.
